It’s been said time and time again that shoes are the most important item in a wardrobe. The very best suit cannot compensate for the overall bad impression of poor quality or worn shoes. The good news is that it is better to own a few quality pairs of shoes, than to have a closet full of inexpensive variations that are uncomfortable and look “cheap”. When in doubt, spend the extra money…it will be well worth it in the long run!
When shopping for a good quality shoe, look for shoes that are leather and have a stitched sole. Leather “breathes”, which keep your feet comfortable, is flexible, and best yet, it can be refurbished numerous times. The soles of top quality shoes will be stitched (not glued) and will have a leather or calfskin lining. Check that the stitching is neat and secure.
How many pairs of shoes should a man own? This depends on your lifestyle. At the very least, a man’s closet should have the following, all in good quality:
1. Black Lace-up. This versatile shoe can be worn with suits or jeans, if you buy a neutral style. Purchase a shoe that has a tapered toe (vs. a square toe) with a slim sole and minimal detailing. Patent leather is for tuxedos, only.
2. Brown or Beige Loafer. Loafers are worn with casual sportswear, from jeans to a casual look with a sport coat. They are easy to slip on, and style-wise they should be a good balance between casual and dress. These are a wardrobe staple.
3. Sandals or Flip Flops. These fun shoes can be worn with shorts, and also look great with jeans or khakis paired with a white cotton oxford. Again, purchase a neutral style, in brown, that is not too chunky or casual. Keep the sport sandals for kayaking and water sports, not for wearing with casual clothing.
4. Athletic Sneakers. Everyone needs to hit the gym or the open road for a good run from time to time, and these are the shoes that will get you there! They should be comfortable, light weight, and protect your feet while keeping them cool. NEVER wear sneakers with anything but athletic wear. Possibly shorts, if it is a sporty/casual look and you are headed to a spectator sporting event, but NEVER with jeans, khakis or slacks.
When you invest in good quality shoes, be sure to care for them properly. First, shine them regularly. If you are in a hurry, use an express shine sponge found in most drug stores to give your shoes a quick shine. Keep your shoes clean and dry, and never store them in the box. Shoes, like your clothing, need to “breathe” so keep them in the open air. Lastly, be sure to purchase a shoe tree to maintain the shape of your dress shoes and loafers. Shoe trees are inexpensive and will extend the life of your shoes.
That’s it! Men are fortunate that they can keep it basic. Women may need dozens of shoe styles and colors, but men can keep a few styles in their closet and still look great!
